In June, 1997, after
almost 20 years, we sold the business and retired.
In November, 1997, Sandy was diagnosed with
Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and renal cell carcinoma. Thus began an almost
11 year battle against disease. A battle that is lost more frequently
than won. After the initial "why me?" bout, she decided that she would
fight the disease and was determined to live. We consulted with Dr.
Moskowitz at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, but she
remained a patient of Dr. Readling at Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, NY, who gave the treatments.
She responded
well to the initial chemo,
tolerating it well, but, of course, losing her hair. Wearing a wig, and
tiring easily, she continued her life, seeing friends, making plans and
taking
care of the house and family. She wasn't going to let the damn disease
or
the chemo ruin her life.
By the end of May '98, the chemo was finished and she was well enough
to have the kidney removed. Recovery was slow, and she remained in the
hospital longer than planned, but she was rid of the renal cell
carcinoma and the lymphoma was in remission. |
