September of 1984, Sandy's Hangups had been
open in the Oakdale Mall for a little over 3 years. A vacancy came up
that mall management wasn't able to fill quickly, so we were asked if
we could use the space for a Christmas operation. We had been
transitioning into prints and posters, and decided to set up a shop
that would sell framed prints. The rent was low and we figured that
whatever didn't sell would go into our inventory. We called the
operation Picture Pretty Art Gallery. We did so well that we decided to
open in a permanent location.
We looked around to find a reasonable rental, and found space in the
Vestal Plaza.
By the time the Sandy's Hangups lease expired in the
mall, and the proposed rent had tripled, the Vestal Plaza operation was
successful, so the mall lease was allowed to expire.
We opened a Picture Pretty in the Arnot Mall right next to Sandy's
Hangups. Eventually, we took out the wall between the 2 and eliminated
the oil paintings, moving into limited editions and higher-priced paper
art. We also increased our framing operation. Sandy was a whiz at
putting together framing options for customers. She liked doing that as
much as she liked selling.
Boscov's Department store opened in downtown Binghamton and seemed to
re-vitalize the area. We bought a building on Court Street, and opened
our largest gallery. The store was profitable, but never lived up to
our expectations. We sold the building at a profit. The Vestal Plaza
store had outgrown its space, so we moved to a larger store in the
plaza. We sold the stores in the Arnot Mall and in N. Syracuse, and had
finally arrived at what was comfortable to run - one
profitable
gallery close to home.
